T.V. Series The List…

Lately I’ve been playing catch up in watching some of the today’s latest T.V. Series and that got me thinking as to just how many I have watched over the years.  Also I happened to see a post on my sister’s blog entitled ‘Blast From The Past T.V. I reckon it must be a collection of Youtube videos since the youtube site is banned in the office.

Mission BirdWatch

Well there seems to be a new theme to the Birdpark, and there are some parts still under construction. Anyhow as always the kids enjoyed themselves.  Here are the pics we took…….

Oh and for the fun of it, there are 3 bird photos for you to guess or state their respective names. The photos will have an X placed under them (X name this bird).  The first person to state all three names in the comments sections wins 3 complimentary tickets to visit the SIngapore Birdpark.  Contest ends 8th Dec as I will need time to mail them to you, also the tickets expires Dec 2008.   If there are no clear winners then I’ll just give them to whomever has the most right answers.  Happy playing………Oh overseas contestants are welcome though you won’t have much time to make travel plans…hee hee

Answers will be up after 8 Dec 2008

Update 08 Dec – Looks like there are no winners….check the photos again for the answers

Oh and here are two additions for two of the birds in question….

School Hols…

Well if you’re wondering…I’ve been busy taking the kids out because since the school holiday which started on the 15th Of November they were more less cooped up at home.  So I took a few days leave and plan to take them to their favourite places here in Singapore.

  • Downtown East Particularly Wild Wild Wet
  • The Singapore Zoological Gardens particularly the New Children’s World
  • The BirdPark

See ya!

Dear Santa..

Dear Santa,

I have almost everything I need, so here is something I don’t really need and yet want for Christmas! It’s just something that most guys would love to have which does not have anything to do with the opposite sex. *grins*

Agent M Spy Sunglasses 180°
The Agent M Spy Sunglasses 180° will be available as of 12th December.

These unusual sunglasses have lenses that are mirror-coated on the inside, at their outer edges. They reflect everything going on behind the back of the person wearing them to allow perfect observation without having to turn around. The new MINOX spy sunglasses are also exactly what they look like, a perfectly normal pair of sunglasses with excellent UV protection.

My Gadget Buy

I had been contemplating on whether to purchase the Belkin Desktop Internet Phone for skype.  It looks great and has what looks like a very easy setup.  Even the write up on Asiaone in July of this year was quite good.

The only problem I had was whether to cough up the amount of USD117 (SGD179) on something I may or may not fully utilise.  Afterall guys like me sometimes finds it hard to resist the temptation of getting our hands on gadgets we deem COOL! However after weighing the pros & cons……Oh alright…it was only one big CON which led me to look for a cheaper alternative.  And that is….since my last post on wanting to know how many friends and relatives I have using skype, the answer is currently a miserable ONE.  Then again he was the only one so far who responded so ….

Anyhow so instead of getting this…..

I got his instead as it was on offer…..USD14.10 excluding shipping…..

P.S. Oh Jill! Are you on Skype?? Haven’t received it yet, but will need someone to test it out with, cos the chap I know in Japan is usually swarmed with work!

Beware Latest Gift Basket Fraud Scam

Haven’t been able yet to verify if this one is true, however it is a highly possible scenario especially during this festive period.  Always better to safe and informed!  This one is from an email alert received…..

*UPDATE 05 JAN2009*  It Happened But NOT in SINGAPORE, this is one of the those ‘viral emails’ that is changed to suit the sender’s  Agenda!  Well there is still a lesson to be learnt here..

Just happen last week in Singapore .

SOMETHING TO BE AWARE OF.

It works like this:

Last Wednesday I had a phone call late morning from Express Couriers to ask if I was going to be home as he had a delivery for me. He said he would be there in roughly an hour. He turned up with a beautiful basket of flowers and wine. I expressed my surprise as I wasn’t expecting anything like this and said I was intrigued to know who was sending me such a lovely gift. He said he was only delivering the gift and that the card was being sent separately (the card has never arrived). There was a consignment note with the gift. He went on to explain that because the gift contained alcohol he has to charge the recipient $3.50 as proof that he has actually delivered to an adult, and not left it on a door step if the recipient is out, to be stolen or taken by children. This seemed logical and I offered to get the cash. He then said that the company required the payment to be by Eftpos so he’s not handling cash and everything is properly accounted for.

Frank was there and got his credit card and ‘John’ swiped the card on this small mobile machine that also had a small screen upon which Frank entered in his pin number on. A receipt was printed out and given to us.

Between last Thursday and Monday, $4,000 was withdrawn from our credit account at ATM machines in the north shore area. It appears a dummy credit card was made using the details in the machine and of course they had Frank’s pin number. The Bank has stopped our cards and I’ve been to the Police this morning, where they confirmed that it is a definite scam and many households were hit during the first 3 days of October.

So PLEASE be wary of accepting a gift you ‘ re not expecting especially if the card is not with it. We ‘ ve all received gifts like this and would never dream that it could be such a despicable act. Please also let other female friends and relatives know. Hopefully, these fraudsters have ceased this activity by now but you never know.

Our Visit To The Tiny Doctors

It started out as a disappointing WET afternoon visit to the zoo today, as the kids had badly wanted to see and have fun at the new children’s world.  Instead we found ourselves at the cafe, eating and drinking the time away hoping for the rain to stop.

Well as we were making our way out of the zoo to return home Lo and Behold! there was a newly opened Spa by Kenko.  They even had tiny doctor fishes in their tiny lab coats awaiting patients for consultation.   YES of course I am kidding….What they actually have is a fish spa available and that is something we’ve been wanting to try.  We decided that all for of us were going to try it for 10mins just for the experience.  The kids took a while to warm up to the experience, Kenan much faster than Seth.

In the end we all enjoyed it so much….we paid…hmmm I mean I paid for another 10mins!  This was after we had already left the estabishment, meaning we went back again for another 10min session.  I personally saw and felt a marked improvement after the sessions!  Oh and for those of you wondering what this post is all about, here are the pics I took, also an interesting write up on the doctor fish or Garra Rufa can be found here.

Skype Internet Telephony

I remember a couple of years back that is when they first started, I downloaded and tried the software and while it worked fine, the sound quality etc. wasn’t all that great at the time.  Also very few people I knew, either heard about it or even bothered to setup accounts so I couldn’t really test it out fully.  Besides not everyone had a fast enough connection or a good enough PC setup.

Recently I decided to try it out again and this time round, I am amazed at the sound quality and convienience of setting up an account.  There are also a whole lot more options and services for which one can choose to pay for.  The only question is how many people are even using Skype or some other Internet Telephony software to begin with?

You can download the Skype software if you’re interested here

Friends and relatives do let me know if you’re on Skype okay either in the comments section or via email?  Or you could just do the poll….

(DVD)House M.D.

Casts : Hugh Laurie, Lisa Edelstein, Omar Epps, Robert Sean Leonard, Jennifer Morrison, Jesse Spencer.

I did a scan on my reviews of TV series and could not believe I left out HOUSE M.D.!  I am a huge fan of this series though currently I am playing catch up and watching the 3rd Season.  So what is so great about this tv series…..well here is a little bit of what it is all about first….

Gregory House, MD (played by Hugh Laurie), is an observational genius with the ability to see a pattern in small things and draw conclusions from that. Dr. House is a diagnostician instead of a detective like the great Sherlock Holmes so instead of criminals, the enemies are germs, diseases and other vulnerabilities of the human body, which are tracked and hunted down.

The stories usually follow the pattern of the scientific method: The team thinks up possibilities based on the evidence and then tests them, eliminating the ones that don’t pass the tests until they come up with a theory that works. Or as Sherlock Holmes said, “When you have eliminated all which is impossible, then whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.” Some critics have derided the plots for being formalistic, but if through interesting fiction, the writers are demonstrating how science works, there is genius in their method.

Now let’s see what I love about the series….

  • Great casts complementing one another to give you a rounded and brilliant portrayal of their characters.
  • Hugh Laurie is fantastic as the highly intelligent, bitter, witty, cranky lead! He brings a wicked charm to his character.
  • The writers keep the stories fresh, exciting and intellectually stimulating.

In fact this little snippet of a review by MNDOC sums it up for me….

Let me put it simply. I am a physician, and as an inviolable rule, I HATE medical shows. Granted, TV series tend to be one dimensional, due to inherent difficulties in the genre, but “doctor shows” are something I avoid like the proverbial plague.

And then one evening I caught “House, MD” and was completely drawn into the show. In House I find the anti-hero that I’ve been waiting for in a medical show. The guy who knows everything, but is wrong often enough to keep us all guessing. I enjoy the contrast of House and his cadre of young fresh faced colleagues, complete with starched white lab coats, who struggle as much with their professionally imposed constraints, and sense of decorum, as they do with his personality. And, wonder of wonders, the use of ironic and tragic comedy is without peer in what I’ve seen in the TV world in recent memory. In a nutshell, I really never know what any given character will say or do and it’s that freshness that will keep me coming back for more. Somewhere there is a team of writers who actually know their craft, and an acting ensemble that knows how to pull it off. Now I can watch my TV one hour a week……..
