Just got round to watching this movie for the fourth time, as I just got hold of it from HMV. They were having a two-disc offer i.e. ‘You’ve got mail’ and ‘Must Love Dogs’ both favourites of mine for $19.95 . And I just couldn’t help but wonder if it was a remake from the 1949 movie “In The Good Old Summertime” which was one of my dad’s favourites because of the song. I just watched the LD again last month with Dad and we enjoyed it immensely. Judy Garland and Van Johnson made quite a pair, and well so does Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.
I did a check via Google and in fact this movie was a remake of a 1940 one ‘The Shop Around The Corner’ starring Margaret Sullivan and another favourite actor of mine James Stewart. ‘In The Good Old Summertime’ was a musical remake thereafter.
That’s the beauty of a great story, which can be retold with a modern twist 58 years later and still be loved throughout generations. Can you imagine a Sci-Fi version? ‘You’ve Read My mind!’ 😆
