Movie – The Spiderwick Chronicles

Genre: Science-Fiction/Fantasy Starring: Freddie Highmore, Mary-Louise Parker, Nick Nolte, Joan Plowright, David Strathairn

Sypnosis : From the beloved best-selling series of books comes “The Spiderwick Chronicles,” a fantasy adventure for the child in all of us. Peculiar things start to happen the moment the Grace family (Jared, his twin brother Simon, sister Mallory and their mom) leave New York and move into the secluded old house owned by their great, great uncle Arthur Spiderwick. Unable to explain the strange disappearances and accidents that seem to be happening on a daily basis, the family blames Jared. When he, Simon and Mallory investigate what’s really going on, they uncover the fantastic truth of the Spiderwick estate and the creatures that inhabit it.

Went to watch it this evening with the kids and we all enjoyed it! A dark fairy tale illuminated by colourful characters and the two leading young, talented casts. ( Freddie plays the twins and remarkably well).

In this day and age it gets tougher to convince the younger generation that magical realms or creatures exist. However I think this movie did a great job, with it’s simple but imaginative plot and great CGI effects it manages to be a crowd pleaser for the young, young at heart and the old.

I had never even heard of the Spiderwick Chronicles before today and while I believe they did a decent enough adaptation of the books, I cannot help but feel that there are certain elements or exciting events that could be missing which would have made the roller coaster ride, bigger and better!

Still it is a must watch for the family…Oh and a word of caution, that it may be a little scary for children five and under……
