Beware – Of Vishing Attacks

Vishing” or “Vhishing” or “Voice Phishing”, this new type of Credit/Debit Card scam makes use of the phone to get your personal financial information for fraudulent use.

How Vishing works ? First, you get an email message saying the security of your bank account is compromised and you have to dial a 1-800 number to verify the account information.

Once you fall in the trap and dial the number mentioned in the e-mail, you are asked, using automated messages, to type your 16-digit card number. The call can then be used to harvest additional details such as security PIN, expiry date, date of birth, bank account number, etc.

Consider this…..your issuing bank already has all your information, why would they need you to enter all your account specific details again? Also never verbally give out your security pin because even the bank staff will not have access to that.

Below is a sample email from the fraudsters…..

Dear Cardmember,

This is not a promotional e-mail. Please call us immediately at 1-800-123-0099 regarding recent activity on your XXX XXX Account. We’re available 24/7 to take your call.

Please disregard this e-mail if you’ve already spoken to us since the date this e-mail was sent.

We appreciate your prompt attention to this matter.

Thank you
